Blog B*#(%

This_Is_My_Bitchy_Face_by_lalaliettaI just need to take a minute to say something about blogs.

I look at a lot of different blogs, and most of them are great. But even the greatest ones do something that is a huge pet peeve of mine.

Disclaimer: This is just my opinion as an amateur blogger. But as a lifelong reader, I think it’s a good one.

To me, an “About” page should be, primarily, about the blog. It should not be the author’s life story. Maybe it talks a little bit about the blogger as well, but that should be secondary. While I do like getting to know the person behind the words (truly), the actual content of the blog is what will make me stay or go.

Yes, I realize that I have an “About” page, but it’s an “About Me” page. I chose to describe the blog in a sidebar.

Freelance Adventures: Guest Posting

guest passOk, third post of the week. I know. I can hardly believe it either.

No guarantees for next week. Just sayin’.

So what’s new on the world of freelance for Katie you ask? Guest posting, that’s what. I got an email about two weeks ago from a client I worked with several months back, asking if I would be able to help out with some guest postings.

I’ve always enjoyed working with this client – he’s straightforward and dependable, which are not to be taken for granted in the freelance world. And bonus, his timing was impeccable, as some recent client turnover has put me on the hunt for work.

Hint, hint.

Anyway, long story short, I’m now an “outreach assistant” for certain web sites. This means that I try to land guest postings on blogs that write on topics fitting with said web sites, and simply put site URLs in my author bio.

Fabulous things about this:

January 6: Why I Blog

colonial wedding

I’ve been blogging regularly – three times a week – for nearly six months now. I decided it was time to review the concept.

I set up this blog a couple of years ago as a place to play around, make myself feel hip and keep a volume of writing. I figured I’d either turn it into something real or just let it become inactive. Happily, I’ve pretty much kept up with it.

One thing I’m proud of is the running themes on the different post days. Mondays are for recounting personal, sesonal and random thoughts. Wednesdays are practical with recipes, science and health info. Fridays alternate between an update on my freelance career and some sort of creative piece.

Week Four/Month One:

Four weeks – one month. That went fast.

In the spirit of needing to branch out and work with real people, I met up this week with a former co-worker whom I call my marketing guru, my employment inspiration, my cohort in the great jailbreak. She’s worked a lot of places, and knows that a healthy and fulfilling work environment – whatever that might be for you – is essential to a successful career.

She gave me tips about branding myself, spicing up my resume and using my blog to market myself. These were things I knew deep down, but I think I needed a reminder that I had a decent foundation to build on, and just have to frame and build on it correctly.

Week 3:

And so, my darlings, we come to the end of Week Three of this experiment.

Still doing alright.

There’s something about that number, three. It seems significant…

Welcome to .com Land!

Hi! This is my first post on the new .com!

I have a lot to learn yet about blogging in general, and probably even more about exactly what I want for this blog… I do know that I intend to post at least three times a week (beginning next week), and at the same time begin my career as a freelancer. I’m nervous, but couldn’t be happier to be out from under the thumb of a boss, mandatory lunch breaks and the creative suppression of a grey cubicle.

I’m still trying to figure out how to organize things like blog subscriptions and RSS feeds and frivolous images of myself, so I beg you to bear with me as I get my act together. I will do what I can to make the content somewhat interesting in the meantime.

And so… on this my darling husband’s 32nd birthday (have a happy one, dearest!), I declare myself blogging adult – bladult.

Thanks for reading!

This is Us

coworker-drug-stories

Hi. I’m hoping to make this blog something that you find fun to read, something that entertains you.

As a writer by trade, I understand the importance of regular craft exercise, even in this time of personal unemployment. So I am here, and hoping you are too, to enjoy the writing and the reading.

I might give you stories, I might test on you snipets of the book my friend and I are working on.

I might do something completely different.

Either way, here we are – let’s make it fun.
