Getting Down from the Horse, Voting with Choices

long legged horse bronze sculptureI don’t want to be on a high horse. Realizing that I might sometimes put myself in an ideal light on this blog, I assure you, it is always with the intention of encouraging readers to be happy and healthy.

But today, I will confess. Following is a list of things I do that are less than healthy, eco-conscious, socially conscious, progressive or productive. I am not proud, but simply human.

Let me preface the list by saying that some of these shortcomings are due to time and money constraints. If you are fortunate enough to have the time and money to make better choices for yourself, your family and your world, I implore you to do so. When you vote with your choices (economically and socially), you ask the industry and community to take heed. The result will be better options for the rest of us.

Without further ado:

-I do not make my own dish/hand/laundry soap, or even always buy the eco-friendly sorts.

-I use disposable diapers way more often than I would like, and sometimes out of laziness.

-I use canned tuna, artichokes and refried beans.

-I love starch, and will eat a box of macaroni and cheese or mashed potatoes ’til my tummy hurts.

-I give in to processed faux meats on occasion.

-I feed my daughter frozen (organic!) produce too often. Sorry, just couldn’t let that one slip…

-I sometimes consider chips and salsa a meal.

-I slack on the exercise WAYYYYY too often post baby.

-I do not get outside enough.

-I use paper towel.

-I have mainstream cleaning products in my house.

-I had a, um, lady yeast issue, and continued to drink wine and eat ice cream. Dummy.

-I wear makeup that is not natural/organic blah blah blah…

-I have not been to the Farmers’ Market yet this year. *hangs head in shame*

-I have two bikes, both of which are languishing only for the want of new tires.

-I am about to buy a new purse from Meijer, rather than the fair trade shop (I’m particular!).

-I buy cheap, cheeeeaaaap whiskey.

-I do not have my cat on a natural cat diet. Sorry, Ted.

-I use regular, inexpensive toothpaste.

-I cave to applying the deodorant with antiperspirant too many days a week.

-I watch too much Netflix.

-I Facebook too much and read actual books too little.

-I have not made peace with certain people with whom I may have been less than understanding/forgiving.

-I do not meditate.

-I procrastinate.

-I depend on lists… and this is a list. Huh.

So there you have it. I guess maybe these are some to-dos. Of course, stress relief is important, and I’ve seen what stressing over being perfect can do to me, so no thank you. Dirty laundry aired.

Let’s all try to be better.
